Understanding Entrepreneurship

Yael Shafran Bar Lev

Entrepreneurship is a process where individuals or groups identify opportunities in the market, develop innovative ideas, and turn them into new products, services, or businesses.

Entrepreneurs are the people leading this process, taking financial and personal risks to establish and manage new ventures.

Entrepreneurship is a complex and multi-dimensional process that creates innovative and meaningful value for the economy and society.

Entrepreneurship can be divided into three main categories. Each type of entrepreneurship presents unique challenges and opportunities, contributing to societal and economic development in diverse ways.

Business Entrepreneurship

Business entrepreneurship involves establishing and managing businesses for profit. Entrepreneurs identify market opportunities, develop new products or services, and create companies to generate income.

This includes not only tech startups but also fashion brands, food companies, and local businesses like shops, restaurants, and cafes with an entrepreneurial spirit.

Social/Community Entrepreneurship

Social entrepreneurship focuses on creating solutions for social or environmental problems while maintaining a sustainable business model. The primary goal of social entrepreneurs is to positively impact society rather than maximize profits.

Examples of this type of entrepreneurship are common in education, healthcare, environmental preservation, community projects for disadvantaged populations, farmers’ markets, mutual aid initiatives, and more.

Intrapreneurship

This refers to entrepreneurship within existing organizations, where employees take the initiative to develop innovative projects and improve existing processes. Intrapreneurs work within the company’s framework, leveraging its resources to create new value.

Examples include:

  • Developing new products within large tech companies.

  • Optimizing production processes in industrial organizations.

  • Initiatives to improve customer service and user experience in service companies.

Intrapreneurship is a powerful driver of innovation within established companies and can be cultivated effectively.
